No Is Beautiful: Pure Leaf's Emotional Journey to Success

Through a strategic partnership with the SeekHer Foundation, Pure Leaf aims to grant $1 million to organizations and initiatives that empower women in reclaiming their agency and overcoming challenges in the workplace.


The Struggles of Women in the Job Market:


While the job market shows signs of improvement, there are still 1.14 million jobs to fill to reach pre-pandemic employment levels. A significant portion of this gap consists of women who lost jobs or left the workforce during the pandemic. Mothers, in particular, bore the brunt of the pandemic's impact, facing increased responsibilities for childcare and schooling as work transitioned to home.


The "Superwoman Syndrome" and the Fear of Saying "No":


Not only have mothers been affected, but working women without children also struggle with their share of challenges. Many are caught in a cycle of external and internal pressures, trying to meet work and caregiving demands while neglecting their own self-care. A SeekHer study highlights that women often put others' needs before their own, fearing negative consequences for setting boundaries or saying "no" at work. Companies often fail to provide a safe space to discuss personal and professional needs, further exacerbating these concerns.


The Impact of Saying "No":


In collaboration with SeekHer, Pure Leaf conducted a survey revealing the far-reaching effects of saying "no" at work. Alarmingly, three-quarters of women expected negative consequences for setting boundaries, and almost two-thirds experienced the negativity they feared. Additionally, the study found that saying "no" had significant financial implications, with white women losing $731 per incident and racial discrimination exacerbating the loss for Asian-American, Hispanic, and Black women.


Empowering Women through "No Grants":


To address this issue, Pure Leaf and SeekHer joined forces to launch the "No Grants" initiative. The program seeks to provide $2,000 grants to 100 women who have faced adversity for asserting themselves at work. Olympic champion Allyson Felix, known for her courage in challenging Nike's policies on women athletes' pregnancy, supports the initiative.


Creating Equitable Work Environments:


The "No Grants" initiative addresses the root causes of the problem, acknowledging that the issue existed before the pandemic. Women often accept low-promotability tasks more frequently than men due to societal expectations and fear of consequences. This cycle perpetuates the disadvantageous treatment of women in the workplace. Business leaders can make a difference by equitably assigning tasks and implementing guidelines for accepting or declining requests.
